The prequel to this film, released in the 1990s, was instrumental in relaunching Mexican cinema beyond the country’s borders. The sequel updates the complex emotional entanglements of the characters in the original film, while interweaving new characters from a new generation. Machismo and domestic violence are still present, but they make room for new twists, such as sexual and romantic diversity.
