Being / Óscar de la Renta
The Temporary Exhibit Hall at Centro León (Santiago de los Caballeros) welcomed 2020 with a celebration of the genius and magic of one of the Dominican Republic’s best-known sons: Oscar de la Renta. Close to 50 of the designer’s original dresses, as well as numerous personal belongings, magazine covers, books, and video testimonials from those who knew him, help reconstruct his essence and personality in five thematically-organized spaces: Celebrating Oscar; Oscar Renta Fiallo is Oscar de la Renta; In the Studio, Inspiration is Everything; I’m Just an Island Boy: Transnational Oscar; and Essence of a Legend: Being Oscar de la Renta.
This anthology provides a deep and sensory understanding of the artist and his background with a scent laboratory that reproduces the aromas De la Renta used most often in his perfumes and a menu in the Centro León Café featuring the designer’s favorite Dominican dishes.
A number of prestigious institutions collaborated on the exhibit, including: The Metropolitan Museum of Art (The MET), Kent State University Museum (KSUM), George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, Fashion Institute of Technology, Young Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, The Estate of Antonio López and Juan Ramos, Museo Bellapart, Museo Fernando Peña Defilló, and Archivo General de la Nación.
