Pisco: From Peru to the World
Although still modest, exports of pisco to the rest of the world look very promising, according to a recent report by the Commission for the Promotion of Peru through Exports and Tourism (PROMPERU). In the first quarter of 2019, sales of this Peruvian spirit grew 50% compared to the same period of 2018. Ecuador, Colombia, and Australia showed the largest increases (2,291%, 690%, and 125%, respectively), although by volume, the US and Spanish markets (28.5% and 24.7%, respectively) remain noteworthy. Exports of pisco to France, Australia, and Brazil are also drawing some attention, growing from 1.3 million dollars in 2009, to 5.7 million in 2018. The drink is currently available in 33 markets in America, Asia, and Europe, and Peruvian authorities have succeeded in registering it as a “Designation of Origin” product in seventy countries.
