The Golden Cage

This Mexican drama is one of the decade’s most successful Latin American films, winning more than 30 awards at prestigious festivals such as Cannes, Mar de Plata, and Havana. It tells the story of three young Guatemalans and an indigenous Tzotzil youth from the state of Chiapas who dream of emigrating to the United States. Together they’ll attempt to survive the dangers experienced by thousands of Mexican and Central American migrants, taking refuge in love and friendship.
The film’s director, Diego Quemada-Díez, graduated from the American Film Institute in Los Angeles. Although born in Spain, Quemada-Díez has lived in the Americas for more than 20 years and is now a Mexican citizen. The Golden Cage is his first film as director, but he has worked as a cameraman or camera assistant on a score of productions, including major films such as 21 Grams (Alejandro González Iñárritu) and The Constant Gardener (Fernando Meirelles).
