From the 15th to the 18th of this month, you might consider a getaway to Ocú, a town in the province of Herrera, in the interior of Panama. These dates herald one of Panama’s most traditional celebrations, El Manito de Ocú, which pays tribute to the traditional greeting of a congenial handshake accompanied by “Ta’ la Manito,” equivalent to “Hi, brother.” The festivities include dances such as the Mejorana and La Gallinera, along with the iconic Duelo del Tamarindo, in which two men figuratively confront death. A traditional wedding is held, as well as contests that give the celebration a special flavor. This year’s standard-bearer is the renowned folklore composer, Alfredo Chávez.
