Afterlives
Abdulrazak Gurnah
2020
Ilyas and Hamza, two young African men who fought alongside German colonial troops, return to their village in Tanzania after the end of the First World War. Their experiences living with the Germans were in some ways similar and other ways very different, reflecting the themes of identity, colonialism, rebellion, and introspection that Gurnah always weaves into his narratives. Afterlives is the recently crowned Nobel laureate’s latest book. Very few of his works have been translated into Spanish, but we are sure that publishing houses will soon rush to make up for the lack of Spanish-language versions. In the meantime, we can hunt down and enjoy Gurnah’s En la orilla (By the Sea), Paraíso (Paradise), and Precario silencio (Admiring Silence). Good luck!
