The interesting thing about C. Tangana is that he refuses to be pigeonholed in a single genre, which keeps music journalists circling his flame like moths. He isn’t just hip hop, trap, or reggaeton; he’s all of them and also none. True to form, the artist brings a new twist to his urban feel with “El madrileño,” an apparent tribute to Latin America’s musical heritage featuring collaborations with José Feliciano, Kiko Veneno, Andrés Calamaro, Elíades Ochoa, Jorge Drexler, the Gipsy Kings, and Toquinho, among others.

The eponymous label and series, led by hip hop producer Adrian Younge and DJ and producer Ali Shaheed Muhammad, features some of contemporary jazz’s most powerful creators including Gary Bartz, Roy Ayers, Gil Scott-Heron, Doug Carn and the Brazilians Azimuth, Joan Donato, and Marcos Valle. The collection is deliciously vibrant and innovative and definitely sets the tone for the genre in the years to come.
